Glossary

General Terms:

  • Accuracy - A value which expresses the level of precision incurred during transactions. Accuracy can be measured on many levels including inventory levels, shipping quantities, and bookkeeping records.
  • Distribution - The activities associated with moving materials from source to destination. Can be associated with movement from a manufacturer or distributor to customers, retailers, or secondary warehousing/distribution points.
  • E-Commerce - Conducting business electronically via traditional EDI technologies, or online via the internet. Product display, online ordering, and inventory management are all e-commerce activities made possible via web visibility through EDI. This includes business activity in the business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) sectors.
  • Five S - Term used to stress the processes of organization of a facility to best identify, maintain, and store one’s inventory while sustaining new inventory.
  • Information System (IS) - Managing the flow of data in an organization in a systematic, structured way to assist in planning, implementing, and controlling.
  • Inventory Management - The process of ensuring the availability of products through inventory administration.
  • Just-in-Time (JIT) - An inventory control system that controls material flow into assembly and manufacturing plants by coordinating supply and demand to the point where desired materials arrive just in time for use.
  • Logistics - The process of planning, implementing, and controlling procedures for the efficient and effective transportation and storing of goods including services, and retail information from the point of origin to the point of consumption for the purpose of conforming to customer requirements.
  • Procurement - The activities associated with acquiring products or services.
  • Reclamation - The process of deriving usable materials from waste or other by products.
  • Six Sigma - Term used to stress the continuous reduction in process variation and to achieve near-flawless quality.
  • Staging - The practice of picking material for a production or sales order and moving to a separate area for purposes of identifying shortages or consolidation.
  • Supply Chain - Starting with unprocessed raw materials and ending with the final customer using the finished goods, the supply chain links many companies together.
  • Supply Chain Strategy Planning - The process of analyzing, evaluating, defining supply chain strategies, including network design, manufacturing and transportation strategy, and inventory policy.
  • Third Party Logistics (3PL) - Outsourcing all or much of a company's logistics operations to a specialized company.
  • Transportation mode - The method used for shipping. (land, air, or sea)
  • Value adding services - Services that will add to the value, worth, functionality, or usefulness of a product.
  • Warehousing - The storing or holding of goods.

Warehouse features:

  • Bar Code - A symbol consisting of a series of printed bars representing values. A system op optical character reading, scanning, and tracking of units by reading a series of printed bars for translation into a numeric or alphanumeric identification code.
    • Amware uses bar codes to more quickly and accurately track and locate inventory locations and levels while in storage, receiving, and shipping.
  • Dock Door - Commonly used access point in warehouses for trailers to both receive outbounds and unload inbounds for maximum efficiency.
    • Amware Logistics' warehouse facilities all feature many dock doors and have the capabilities to handle many inbounds and outbounds simultaneously.
  • Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) - Intercompany, computer-to-computer transmission of business information in a standard format. An EDI message consists only of business data, not accompanying verbiage or free-form messages.
    • Amware Logistics has EDI capabilities in all facilities, as well as having the capability to provide our customers with EDI services and upgrades.
  • Fire Safety Systems - Installments in a building as a precaution to fire and other heat hazards.
    • All Amware Logistics facilities feature modern fire safety systems including sprinklers, alarms, and a well trained team to handle the hazards.
  • Loading Pit - Area of a warehouse that allows for indoor receiving and shipping to avoid weather and other external implications compromising the integrity of the cargo.
    • There are multiple indoor loading pits located in Amware Logistics' Morrow public warehousing facility.
  • Radio Frequency (RF) - Form of wireless communications that allow users to relay information via electromagnetic energy waves from a terminal to base section, which is linked in turn to a host computer.
    • Amware Logistics has full capabilities to use RF technology in our inventory and warehouse management systems to provide real time updates for our customers' records.
  • Security Systems - Installments in a building as a precaution to theft and other damaging hazards.
    • All Amware Logistics facilities feature modern security systems including 24 hour camera surveillance, alarms, and secured and fenced in storage areas.

Storage Features:

  • Aerosol Cages - Storage area that is dedicated to aerosol commodities for efficient and safe storage.
    • Amware Logistics' Fulton Industrial facility features aerosol cages that will be able to handle and store aerosol commodities effectively.
  • Ambient Temperature Controlled Storage - Storage area where the temperature of the area is consistently held at a room temperature all year.
    • Amware Logistics' Fulton Industrial facility features ambient temperature controlled storage for materials that are very temperature sensitive.
  • Bulk Storage - Process of storing materials in larger quantities, generally using the original packaging or shipping containers or boxes.
    • All Amware Logistics facilities have bulk storage areas to be able to handle the larger items and quantities efficiently and effectively, without generating any unnecessary costs for either party.
  • Flammable Storage - Storage area that is dedicated to flammable commodities by having special structural qualities that will not be compromised by a fire hazard.
    • Amware Logistics' Fulton Industrial facility features flammable storage capabilities for materials that are considered a fire hazards.
  • Racking - A piece of equipment that is used to store material off of the floor. Racks will typically have shelves, but may be designed to hold materials vertically such as lengths of pipe of metal bar stock.
    • All Amware Logistics facilities have multiple racks installed to ensure the most efficient storage footprint as a cost advantage for both parties.
  • Stacking - The process of placing pallets or units of inventory on top of each other in a bulk storage area.
    • Amware actively uses stacking as a way to minimize costs for both parties involved by effectively lowering a customer's footprint in the warehouse.

Handling Services:

* Amware Logistics has much experience, both in the past and currently, with all of the following handling services.

  • Assembly - A collection of components which have been put together in a unit. There can be multiple levels of subassemblies handled in one large assembly process.
  • Break Bulk - Separating a single consolidated bulk load into smaller individual shipments for delivery to the ultimate consignees.
  • Contract Manufacturing - Relationship where a third party manufactures products that are packaged under another company's label.
  • Cross Docking - A distribution system where materials are received at the warehouse is not put away into storage, but rather is readied for shipment immediately.
  • Dedicated Fleet/Carriers - A third part service that dedicates vehicles and drivers to a single customer for their exclusive use on a contractual basis.
  • Drayage - Transportation of materials and freight on a local basis.
  • Freight Consolidation - Act of combining individual shipments into a single lot in order to reduce costs or improve transportation equipment utilization.
  • Fulfillment - The act of fulfilling a customer order. The act includes order management, picking, and shipping.
  • Kitting - Light assembly of components or parts into defined units ahead of production issue of customer shipment.
  • Master Pack - A large box that is used to pack a number of smaller boxes or containers. This helps protect the smaller boxes or cartons and reduces the number of cartons needed to be handled during the processes.
  • Pool Distribution - Combining shipments from multiple shippers into a single truckload in an effort to reduce shipping charges.
  • Packing and Labeling - Activities related to packing for shipping by placing goods into designated containers, and labeling the container with customer prescribed destination information.
  • Parcel Packing - The act of consolidating two or more individual cartons or cases of a shipment together to form one single unit in an effort to improve efficiency and costs.
  • Picking and Packing - Picking product from inventory and packing into separate containers for custom outbound orders.
  • Returns Processing - Act of reversing the initial supply chain flow, by handling returned materials from the customer, to the manufacturer.
